The Unicode runic block

Unicode encodes runes as characters rather than pictures, which means runic text can be searched, copied and read aloud like any other writing. The block deliberately unifies characters that look different across traditions and separates ones that look similar but are historically distinct, which is why some rows below list several alphabets and others none at all.

Not everything in the block is a letter. Three characters near the end (ᛮ árlaug, ᛯ tvímaðr and ᛰ belgþorn) are numerals, invented for the medieval Scandinavian runic calendar, where the runes stood for the nineteen golden numbers and the sixteen of the Younger Futhark did not reach far enough; see runic numerals. The block also encodes the dots and crosses that runic writing used to separate words, in place of the blank space.

The table is generated directly from the Unicode Character Database, so the codepoints and names here are the standard's, not ours.
